Howard Rheingold (aka "First Citizen of the Internet") is a pioneering figure in new media, especially in the field of virtual communities which have evolved as a result of Internet's emergence as a significant medium. One of Rheingold's seminal works is The Virtual Community an early exploration of virtual life online.
