Hybridization is a term used to describe a type of media convergence whereby a new mode emerges containing elements of combined media. While hybridization is still a jargon term used to describe a new means by an old one (ex: Horseless Carriage, care of Marshall McLuhan) but its verbal affordances take into account a traditional understanding of hybrid speciation, design, and technology.

The term "hybridization" needs further disambiguation from applications it has come to describe in new media in the context of hybrid automobiles, often featured in some media blogs that are examples of hybridization. Hybrid media represent most modern media and the concept that different media forms can work together to create new media.

New media can be theorized as being the sole result of hybridization, supercession and convergence. by taking basic forms of communication and putting the content into a certain type of *medium, those mediums can converge to become a hybrids of its predecessors. generally the progress of this hybridization is judged in two ways; which forms of communication are being converged and for which medium those forms of communication are being delivered through. the later, being more scientifically driven, due to the human necessity to have our mediums be efficient, high in definition, portable and easily accessible. this in recent years has taken great strives to replicate real world experiences as best as possible and in various ways, like high definition TV, 3D enviroments and portable media players, to name a few. all of these are representations of hybridization being refined generation after generation to be more natural to humans and better replicate real life scenarios.
