Knowledge management is an approach to solve a host of problems caused by complexity of the world and the increasing mass and diversity of available information. Douglas Engelbart defines it as "broad process of locating, organizing, transferring, and using the information and expertise within an organization". More simply, it's a method for gathering information and making it available to others.

Proponents of so-called Web 2.0[1] technologies believe some of the collaborative, social and aggregational qualities within web applications fit this description.
