Pirate radio, also known as Free Radio or Micro Radio, has existed since the dawn of broadcasting. A pirate radio station is a station that operates without a government license. Uling low power transmitters, pirate radio stations are difficult to locate and lend their broadcasters the cloak of anonymity. For this reason, pirate broadcasts are often counter-culture, niche in content or the product of radio hobbyists or enthusiasts. In the early days of broadcasting, Clear Channels were used to syndicates programming across the nation, which resulted in homogeneous programming transmitted from high-power stations.
